Mombasa, Kenya – January 30, 2025
In a bold stand against what they describe as exploitation, truck drivers and transporters at the Mombasa port have initiated a strike, supported by the Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA). The core of the dispute revolves around the illegal fees imposed by officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for the arming of Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking System (RECTS) seals, a service that should be provided free of charge.
According to a press release issued by LoDDCA on January 30, 2025, the association has condemned the charging of Kshs 1,000 to 5,000 for this service, which has led to significant financial strain, operational inefficiencies, and delays impacting the entire transport and logistics sector at the port.
Anthony Mutua, the CEO of LoDDCA, took to X to express his support for the striking workers, posting:
“We stand with truck-drivers and transporters protesting KRA officials’ unscrupulous handling of RECTS at the port.
No trucks in, no cargo armed until this illegal extortion ends!
KRA must act NOW to stop this exploitation!#LoDDCA“
The LoDDCA has outlined immediate actions in response to the ongoing issue:
- No Entry Policy: No trucks will enter the port until the issue of unauthorized charges is resolved.
- Cargo Hold: No cargo will be armed with RECTS seals until further notice.
Their demands to the KRA and relevant authorities are clear:
- Cease Unauthorized Charges: An immediate stop to all unauthorized fees for RECTS arming.
- Accountability: KRA officials involved in this scheme must be held accountable.
- Public Statement: KRA must publicly affirm that RECTS arming is free and take action against corrupt officers.
- Disciplinary Action: Removal and prosecution of all corrupt personnel involved in the Northern Corridor.
- Efficient Processes: Implementation of a transparent and efficient cargo clearance process.
LoDDCA has called for unity among all stakeholders in the transport sector to fight against corruption and exploitation, emphasizing that no business will proceed until their demands are met. The association’s stance has been made clear with the rallying cry that “NO TRUCK SHALL OPERATE, NO CARGO SHALL MOVE, AND NO BUSINESS SHALL PROCEED.”

LoDDCA’s actions highlight the need for systemic change and accountability within governmental bodies like the KRA to ensure fair practices in the industry.
