From ferrying goods across counties to connecting regional trade corridors, long-distance drivers ensure that the nation keeps moving. Yet, while their contribution is enormous, their health needs have long been overlooked\u2014especially in the areas of HIV, TB, Malaria, and Mental Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week in Machakos, the <strong>Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA)<\/strong> joined a high-level consultative forum organized by the <strong>Kenya Red Cross Society<\/strong>, in partnership with <strong>North Star Alliance<\/strong>, <strong>NSDCC<\/strong>, <strong>NASCOP<\/strong>, and key government agencies. The forum brought together truckers\u2019 unions, employers, and transport sector stakeholders with one key agenda: to <strong>develop a structured workplace policy<\/strong> that integrates HIV, TB, and Malaria health services into the trucking industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"447\" data-id=\"1393\" src=\"https:\/\/loddca.or.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Work-policy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loddca.or.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Work-policy-2.jpg 668w, https:\/\/loddca.or.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Work-policy-2-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LoDDCA\u2019s presence at this crucial engagement underscores our deep commitment to ensuring that <strong>drivers&#8217; health becomes a national priority<\/strong>\u2014and not just in talk, but in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Truckers are not just transporters of goods\u2014they are also carriers of dreams, responsibilities, and families. Their health must be protected, not ignored.\u201d<\/strong> LoDDCA Executive Statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy being developed seeks to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Embed HIV, TB, and Malaria services at workplace and truck stops;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tackle stigma and discrimination that prevents drivers from seeking care;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote behavioral change and open discussions around health;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage employer-led health programs aligned with Kenya\u2019s <strong>Universal Health Coverage (UHC)<\/strong> goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Bigger Picture: LoDDCA\u2019s Comprehensive Health Initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This milestone comes at a time when <strong>LoDDCA is rolling out a comprehensive healthcare program<\/strong> in partnership with the government. This program not only focuses on infectious diseases but also highlights an often-neglected issue in the transport sector: <strong>Mental Health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-distance driving comes with long hours of isolation, chronic stress, job insecurity, and little to no psychosocial support. These factors contribute to high rates of depression, substance abuse, and burnout among drivers. As part of our broader health vision, LoDDCA is working to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establish mobile wellness clinics at key transport hubs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Launch peer-support mental health programs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train leaders within the transport sector on basic mental health first aid;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a 24\/7 mental health hotline tailored to truckers\u2019 needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining both <strong>physical and mental health<\/strong> support, we are redefining what it means to care for drivers holistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At LoDDCA, we are not just advocating for change\u2014we are building it. We believe that a safe, healthy driver is not only more productive but also more empowered to live a dignified life.
